As good illustration skills are the very foundation for creating realistic images in any type of media, this class will introduce you to the technique of drawing plants using layers of tone to create realistic 3-D effects on paper. Whether you are an experienced artist or a fledgling beginner, this workshop will help guide you in a step-by-step way, to sharpen your powers of observation, as well as improve your drawing skills. Botanical subjects such as vegetables, fruits or flowers will be drawn from life in a studio setting.
Materials and Supplies that are student responsibility:
~.5 HB mechanical pencil (easily available at most stores)(if you want to use a range of graphite pencils, 2H, HB and 2B will be okay but also bring a sharpener. This workshop requires a very sharp pencil, that is why a mechanical pencil is preferred)
~Soft graphite pencil (for making transfer paper-4B is good)
~Kneaded eraser
~White plastic eraser
~Low-tack tape (or better yet, artist’s tape if you have it)
~Tracing paper (or pad of tracing paper 9”X12” or 11”X14”)
~Good quality smooth drawing paper, 80lb/130 gm/m or heavier, a pad 9” X12” or 11”X14” like Strathmore, 400 is great (if you bring loose sheets you will also need a drawing board with clips)
~Portable table lamp and extension cord
~Cardboard box large enough to contain a plant subject in a vase (approx. 10”x12”x14”)
Students can enter the gallery through the front door and go down the stairs. If stairs are a concern, you may enter from the lower back level and park behind Throwbax Bar and Grill. If the lower-level door is locked, please knock loudly so someone can come and let you in.
