Ida Tomminen (she/her)
I work with mass-produced everyday objects and found commercial photograph, combining them through UV printing. My interest lies in the relationship between the flat image and the three-dimensional object. Because of its delimiting nature, the image functions as an index in relation to the object. My practice is about searching for the most universally recognizable, most generic image possible and pair it with an object so that the ready-mades can reveal something from each other.

As if there was an original

I went to the store to buy a football. I know what a football looks like, even though I haven’t played much. I browse the wide selection, but there is no football like the one I imagined. Where is it? I want the original football. The real football. The one kids try to draw but fail, because the ball’s spherical pattern is actually quite complicated.Later I learn that the 32-panel black-and-white design became a global standard for depicting a football in various media, introduced by Adidas Telstar at the 1968
European Football Championship. But when I search for pictures of the iconic ball, I find myself disappointed. It’s too specific. The visual idea of the ball is stronger than its origin. The football emoji (⚽ ) is more of a football than any actual ball can ever be.
The exhibition presents sculptural works combining functional objects and found commercial photography.
