About the event

The Ocean Sings
Join us for a journey, "The Ocean Sings", Saturday November 29 at The Arcitc University Museum of Norway — where sound, story, and nature meet in a dialogue that challenges how we listen to the living world.

In a time of climate crisis and biodiversity loss, The Ocean Sings invites the audience into a listening space not only about nature, but with it. Through musical soundscapes and immersive storytelling, the performance challenges the exploitive mindset that sees nature only as resources and instead highlights its intelligence, interconnectedness, and right to exist. What does it mean to be in dialogue with nature, rather than in control of it?

At the heart of the performance is a close collaboration between Elvira Runerheim - a Swedish composer, musician, and cultural producer working across folk, jazz, and contemporary music - and Miyuki Daorana, from the Greenlandic part of Inuit Nunaat, who has worked with advocacy for Indigenous and Human Rights, and Climate Justice, ranging from local to international levels.

They are joined by Jakob Rørtveit, a violinist with a bachelor’s degree in performance from the Tromsø Conservatory of Music. With a background in both folk and classical music, he focuses on interplay and musical dialogue across genres.
Marie Bottheim, a saxophonist and composer with a master’s degree in performance from the Tromsø Conservatory of Music, draws inspiration from rhythmic and folk traditions. Her work centers on communication, co-creation, and exploring different ensemble forms.

Together they all create a space where sound and story intertwine.
