The Jazz at the Griff series, presented by Trail & District Arts Council, brings you Dave Restivo’s “Lovestream”, on Thursday, November 20 at 7:30 pm. Enjoy the jazz club vibe of The Griff as you savour a glass of wine in a setting that is up close and personal with the band.
Dave Restivo brings his new set, "Lovestream", to Jazz at The Griff, featuring new originals and some classic standards with the focus on love.
Pianist and composer DAVID RESTIVO has been a prominent figure in Canada’s jazz community for over 3 decades. Molded by the mountains and coasts of New England and based in Toronto from the early 1980s, he is a JUNO award-winner and nominee best known for his work with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, the Mike Murley Quintet, and legendary “songwriter to the stars” Marc Jordan.
Dave relocated to Nelson in 2019 after accepting the position of Keyboard Instructor at Selkirk College. It was inevitable that he should eventually assemble a Kootenay-based ensemble, and thus Lovestream, featuring Kiyo Elkuf (saxophone), Rob Fahie (bass), and Joel Fountain (drums) was born.
The Sufi master Inayat Khan tells us, “There are many moral principles, just as many drops fall from one fountain; but there is one stream that is at the source of all, and that is love.” In these troubled and uncertain times, our hope is to plug into that stream and take our listeners on a journey of the heart. It’s a journey that will run the musical gamut from original music (some of which will be heard for the first time in this performance) to reimaginings of pieces from the jazz, classical, and rock repertoire. We hope you’ll join us!
The band
Rob Fahie has been performing on electric and upright bass since the age of 16 in the smallest bars to the grandest concert halls. Rob has toured with award-winning singer Sophie Milman, performed concerts with Montreal chanteuse Ranee Lee, and recorded albums with singer-songwriters Laurence Hélie and Rob Lutes. Rob also spent six years touring internationally as musical director for Montreal teen singing sensation, Nikki Yanofsky and he performed at concert halls including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Avery Fisher Hall.
Joel Fountain’s career highlights include performing with: trumpet virtuoso & ‘Order of Canada’ recipient Jens Lindemann; Canadian Jazz sensation Laila Biali; jazz trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson; Grammy nominated jazz big band the “One O’clock Lab band”. Joel has produced and recorded multiple albums, including producing Juno nominated Adam Robert Thomas’s 2018 self-titled solo album.
Kiyoshi Elkuf started playing the saxophone at age 11, and after high school he gained valuable experience performing with local/international jazz legend Donny Clark. After completing his Bachelors in Jazz Studies Degree in 2006 and numerous jazz shows across Canada, Kiyoshi has adapted to family life in the Kootenays where he continues to perform regularly in a variety of settings from classical to reggae, electronic to straight ahead jazz.
