This Saturday, November 1st, we are opening our Second Floor Gallery space to the public for an exhibition of Al Hirschfeld Original Art!
The following day, Sunday, November 2nd, the pieces will be made available online.
This exhibition of Hirschfeld originals features illustrations of Broadway and Hollywood behind the scenes: stages, sets, auditions, rehearsals, and the offstage, offscreen players as well as the actors and actresses on the marquees.
To create his illustrations for publication around opening night, Hirschfeld spent a lot of time visiting theatre productions in rehearsals. He was hired by the Hollywood studios to document their productions. He visited soundstages and on-location sets. From time to time, he incorporated those elements into his illustrations. Fans of stagecraft and filmmaking, the magic of Broadway and Hollywood, will have a particular affinity for these illustrations.
Of particular note in this exhibit are two excellent sequential pieces by Hirschfeld. Hirschfeld rarely created sequential art, so we are very pleased to have them in this exhibition. "The Build Up: She’s Transformed Into The Wow Girl" is a 4-panel series. "The Rise and Fall of an Actress” is a great 8-panel comic strip!
In a change of venue from our previous Hirschfeld shows, this exhibition is being held in our new second floor gallery space inside our Torrance store!
The exhibit opens to the public this Saturday, Nov. 1st, at 11am. The second floor gallery will be open--like the rest of our store--from 11am to 6pm daily.
David Leopold, Hirschfeld's archivist and creative director of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, will be present at the opening Saturday.
In another change from our previous Hirschfeld shows--which were merely one-night events--this exhibition will be in our new second floor gallery space for the month of November.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the non-profit Al Hirschfeld Foundation.
