About the event

WritersShop Writing Workshop - Poem as Metaphorical Statement
Free and open to all! The WritersShop Writing Workshop series is proud to host author Chiquita Mullins Lee as she leads this month's workshop at Point Place Library:

Poem as Metaphorical Statement - Workshop Description

"A poem is a metaphorical statement." This is a quote from a brilliant poet who was critiquing a poem in a writers workshop all the way back in 1989. Those words have haunted me for decades as I've mounted a quest to find and even create such poetic complexity. How does a poet weave a metaphor seamlessly throughout a poem to cultivate an image and a story that powerfully captures and conveys meaning, voice, and experience? During this workshop, participants will explore poems that incorporate the mighty metaphor while also delving into the compelling extended metaphor that blankets the reader within an absorbing sensory experience. The aim is to create and share poems that are perhaps abstract, possibly playful, and probably rhythmic, as we play with language and complicate comparisons.

Chiquita Mullins Lee grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, lives in Columbus, Ohio, and oversees arts education programs for the Ohio Arts Council. Chiquita earned her BA from Vassar College; a master’s degree from Ohio University; and a second master’s degree in journalism from Ohio State. She won individual artist excellence awards in fiction, non-fiction, and playwriting from her local and state arts councils. PBS American Portrait has featured her poetry, and literary journals have published her poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. Involved in local theater, she also writes and performs with Wild Women Writing and leads Word Warriors creative writing ministry at New Covenant Believers Church. Her critically acclaimed play, Pierce to the Soul, premiered at the Contemporary American Theatre Company in Columbus and toured Ohio with A Portable Theatre Company. She co-wrote the award-winning picture book and Ohioana Book award finalist, YOU GOTTA MEET MR. PIERCE published in 2023 by Kokila Press/Penguin/Random House.

The WritersShop Writing Workshop series is hosted by Lucas County Poet Laureate Jonie McIntire in collaboration with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library. The next workshop will be on Tuesday, November 25th at Toledo Heights Library from 6-8pm. Attendance is always open to all and no cost.
