It’s our pleasure to return back and invite you to our next lecture by Nikolas Jaspert (Heidelberg University) "Maritime or Marine History? What Marine Creatures and Substances Reveal About Medieval Societies" on September 24, at 19:00.

In the twenty-first century the threats facing the sea have become a global issue affecting the whole of society. Overfishing of the oceans, loss of species diversity, pollution, overheating and other effects of climate change raise our awareness for the relation between the humans and the sea in the past.

In the Middle Ages, this relationship was seemingly not close. For generally, the mediaeval millennium, which is seen as an era which was dominated by the land. The paper will question this supposition and propose a new approach to the subject. Switching the focus to the sea in medieval research is by no means new and already has its own scholarly history; but here, we will discuss the potentials of maritime versus marine history and debate the advantages of approaches that span the bridge between humanities and natural science.
