This week at FOMO English-language Cinema I'm showing late works and turning points. The last couple of weeks I’ve been screening feel-good Christmas classics. It feels like time to mix things up a bit. None of these films offer comfort. That’s the point.
Kurosawa reflects on mortality in DREAMS, his final swan-sing. Tarkovsky makes THE SACRIFICE while seriously ill and living in exile, asking what belief actually costs when time is running out. Carax detonates his own romantic image with POLA X.
There’s paranoia in the domestic space with ROSEMARY’S BABY, Polanski’s most famous film. There’s PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, a technicolour Australian mystery that refuses explanation. Pasolini’s ARABIAN NIGHTS plays like a last breath of pleasure before he turned towards much darker subject matter.
And then there’s PUTNEY SWOPE, a 1969 Madison Avenue satire that somehow feels painfully current. If you love Mad Men, this is the version that skewers instead of reminisces.
Plus SENTIMENTAL VALUE, DIE MY LOVE and WHITE SUN OF THE DESERT return for follow-up sessions.
