《 UT KCC Movie Marathons: The films of Choi Eun-hee and Shin Sang-ok: Mother and a Guest (사랑방 손님과 어머니) (1961) 》
Choi Eun-hee and Shin Sang-ok are one of the most iconic actor-director pairs in Korean cinema. From the mid-1950s to the late 60s, they made many films which Shin directed and Choi starred in. Choi was also a director herself, becoming one of the first female Korean directors in a male-dominated industry. This series will focus on their early collaborations to show how Shin used cinematic techniques of European neorealism to show the state of South Korea after the Korean War. At the same time, Choi’s daring roles as unconventional women in these films show both how women were perceived in post-war Korea, while at the same time anticipating the depiction of gender in contemporary Korean cinema.

Shin Sang-ok's 'Mother and a Guest' focuses on the role and societal expectations placed on widows. The film depicts the widowed mother of a household who is attracted to her houseguest but is bound by the moral demands, which required widows not to remarry and instead to devote their life to the families of their husbands. Although the film is based on a novel set in the period of Japanese colonisation, it was produced during a short window where films were free from the harsh censorship that came after. This allows Shin to explore the changing gender roles and sexual ethics of post-war Korea and Choi Eun-hee to play another woman bound by the rigid traditions of the society around her.

《 Korea kultuuriklubi filmimaratonid: Choi Eun-hee ja Shin Sang-oki filmid: Ema ja külaline (사랑방 손님과 어머니) (1955) 》
Choi Eun-hee ja Shin Sang-ok on üks tähelepanuväärsemaid režissööri-näitleja koostöid korea filminduses. 1950ndate keskpaigast 1960ndate lõpuni tegid nad koos rohkem kui tosin filmi, mille režissööriks oli Shin ning peaosaliseks Choi. Lisaks sellele oli Choi ka üks esimesi korea naisrežissööre, tehes filme meesrežissööride poolt domineeritud korea filmitööstuses. Käesolevad filmid keskenduvad Shini ja Choi varasele koostööle et näidata seda, kuidas Shin kasutas euroopa neorealismile omaseid tehnilisi võtteid Korea sõja järgse Seouli kujutamiseks. Choi kehastab nendes filmides ebatraditsioonilisi naisi ning tema osatäitmised annavad ülevaate, kuidas naisi sõjajärgses korea filminduses kujutati, olles samal ajal ka inspiratsiooniks naistegelaste kujutamisel 21. sajandi korea filmides.

Shin Sang-oki “Ema ja külaline” keskendub leskede rollile korea ühiskonnas ning lesestaatusega kaasas käivatele ühiskondlikele ootustele. Film räägib lesestunud emast, kes on huvitatud enda majas peatuvast külalisest, aga kelle käitumine on piiratud sotsiaalsete normide tõttu, mis keelavad leskedel uuesti abielluda. Kuigi film põhineb romaanil, mille toimumisaeg on Jaapani okupatsioon, valmis see lühikesel perioodil varastel 1960ndatel kui korea filminduses ei filmitegijaid piiravat tsensuuri. See vabadus võimaldab Shinil kujutada soorollide ning seksuaalsuse muutumist sõjajärgses Koreas ning Choi Eun-heel taaskord märgida naistegelast, kelle elu tõkestavad ühiskonna ranged reeglid.
