How did 20th-century artists see Christmas? From the nostalgic warmth of Norman Rockwell to the vibrant colors of Henri Matisse and the dreamlike imagery of Marc Chagall, the holiday season became a mirror of modern life — filled with light, imagination, and emotion.
Artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Alexander Calder reinterpreted Christmas through modernist and surrealist forms — angels, stars, and nativity scenes transformed into playful lines and abstract symbols.
By the mid-century, Andy Warhol brought Christmas into the world of Pop Art — creating glamorous holiday cards, Tiffany’s ads, and shiny commercial images of angels, trees, and gifts. Following David Hockney and Keith Haring continued to reinvent the festive mood through personal and contemporary visual languages.
Join art historian Ksenia Remezova for a lively lecture exploring how the magic of Christmas evolved in modern art — from nostalgic illustration to pop-culture icons, from family warmth to ironic glitter.
Lecturer: Ksenia Remezova — curator of the FLASH ART print gallery, art historian, curator, lecturer, avant-garde researcher, and visiting teacher at EKA.
