Vanishing ____ —Topologies of the Imagination
拓撲學(Topology),來自希臘字根 topos(位置)與 logos(理、道)的組合。

Using the city wall as a symbolic boundary of urban space, this art project traces the passage of time across centuries of history. During the Qing dynasty, city gates once stood tall, only to be dismantled under modernization projects during Japanese colonial rule. Today, another wave of urban renewal is reshaping the urban fabric. Within the shifting boundaries of “inside” and “outside,” the presence and disappearance of these markers reflect a deep interplay between space and time. When one encounters a roadside monument, stumbles upon a vacant lot, or meanders through disjointed streets, these moments may seem insignificant or disconnected. Yet collectively, they gesture toward a shared subconscious hidden deep within the city.
Building upon the experiences of Tainan 400’s civic participation project Picking Up the Ephemeral and the Tainan Arts Festival’s event A-So-Bi: Mid-Stop — It Could Also Be a Cinema — The Great South Gate Screening Project, this upcoming exhibition Vanishing ____ —Topologies of the Imagination explores the sensory experiences of disappearance brought about by urban transformation. Independent curator WANG Jhen Kai, in collaboration once again with the local independent art space (Absence Space), invites six artists with deep connections to Tainan to collectively map these transformations.
Topology—from the Greek roots topos (place) and logos (reason, principle)—is a branch of mathematics that also serves as a spatial methodology for investigating “place.” Breaking away from the Euclidean coordinates of point, line, and plane, topology considers spatial properties that remain unchanged through continuous deformation such as stretching or bending. Since the mid-20th century, topology has influenced various fields of thought, including the humanities and the arts.
This topological action centers on street photography as its primary medium—not merely treating the city as a physical environment, but invoking a poetic anti-monument experience through the artist’s gaze. Emotional memory, bodily gestures, and found imagery are woven together to construct an inner psychic landscape. The blank space in the exhibition title—Vanishing ____—might suggest the already-demolished city wall, landscapes under reconstruction, long-forgotten personal archives, or flickering traces of light and sound.
