Kitty Todd Nature Preserve
10420 Old State Line Road, Swanton, United States
Join Detroit Bird Alliance for a walk at the 1,400 acre Kitty Todd Nature Preserve in Northwest Ohio as we look for fall migrants and enjoy the unique Oak Openings habitat. Your expert leader will be Dr. Pete Blank, Northwest Ohio Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy. Dr. Blank will take you for a morning of fall birding at the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve. The Kitty Todd Preserve is located in the Oak Openings Region - a region with high biodiversity and unique flora, fauna, and geological features. We'll look for classic Oak Openings birds like red-headed woodpecker, summer tanager, and lark sparrow and fall migrants passing through such as warblers, vireos, and flycatchers.
The Oak Openings region was originally characterized by a series of windblown sand dunes and wetlands that were saturated in winter and spring and extremely dry in summer. These conditions gave rise to vegetation ranging from dry sand barren and oak savanna on the raised dunes to moist sedge meadow and wet prairie in the low-lying swales.
