We are so pleased that National Forest Folk Club are able to bring this wonderful man back to Moira, and that is now even more special knowing that his latest album, released this year, is up for the Mercury Prize next week!
To commemorate his remarkable music career and 84th birthday, folk music legend Martin Carthy released “Transform Me Then Into A Fish” in May. The album represents a significant milestone and a complete circle as he revisits his seminal 1965 self-titled debut with newly recorded arrangements.
Martin was just 24 when he released his debut LP on Fontana Records in 1965. The album was reissued last year on Topic Records and was a milestone because many of the folk songs featured, whilst widely known now, were not at the time of its release. Martin was instrumental in introducing them to an ever-increasing number of new listeners and other artists.
Now, with six decades of experience under his belt, he is able to bring fresh interpretations of classic tracks like “Scarborough Fair” and “High Germany,” showcasing his deep connection to the folk tradition.
And, in recognition of the quality and importance of this new album, it sits in the list of nominations for Album of The Year, and the Awards Show will take place on the 16th of October. We keep our fingers crossed for him but, win or not, it's a hugely well-deserved recognition of Martin Carthy's achievements in the British folk scene as we know it today.
