Basic Security Training
Basic Security Training (BST) is a 40-hour course that adheres to the standard curriculum. Students will learn the fundamentals of private security, as well as the rights and obligations of a security professional, as well as reporting requirements and personal safety techniques.
Who should take this training?
People who are new to the security profession are required to take the Basic Security Training to be eligible to apply for a provincial Security Worker License. Security businesses and security workers that require licensing include:
Uniformed security guards
Security alarm services, sales, monitoring and/or response
Armored car businesses
Security consultants
Locksmiths
Door staff
Bodyguards – close protection
Retail loss prevention
Closed circuit television installer
Electronic locking device installer (Access Control)
In-house security
Private investigator
Doorperson at licensed liquor establishments
Basic Security Training focuses on providing a foundation in:
Professionalism and ethics
Legal studies
Report writing
Personal safety
Final Exam
Once students have completed their in class 40 hours course, they are eligible to take the final exam. A minimum grade of 70% must be achieved on the exam in order to receive your Certificate of Training Completion.
The exam will take place at the JIBC New Westminster campus. Please note students are required to bring their own laptop to the exam.
Students are required to successfully complete the assessment within six (6) months of finishing the theory course. Students can write the exam a maximum of 3 times (each re-write is subject to an exam fee). If after three (3) attempts the student is not successful, they will be required to take the 40 hours in class course again.
Replacement Certificates
Replacement certificates are available for a fee of $38.59. Please fill out the Certificate Replacement Form.
You are required to provide a photocopy of valid government-issued identification along with the Certificate Replacement Form.
Forms can be received either by mail or e-mail. Please see the Certificate Replacement Form for submission details. If you are submitting your application by e-mail, Security Training Programs will provide the instructions on how to make the payment. If you are submitting your application by mail, you can choose to include a certified cheque or money order for $38.59 payable to the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

Tuition & Fees
Participants will pay $210 to Mainland Safety training company to take 40 hours in class and the instructions are given by a JIBC approved instructor. Participants will get the workbook in the class, which has been published and written by JIBC. (There is no additional cost for workbook)

Participant will book their exam with JIBC after completing the course and it will cost participant $ 63.15

Students must have successfully completed BST Theory (SCRT-1651) before registering for the BST Exam (SCRT-1656) to register for your BST Assessment.
1. Visit myJIBC Student Portal
You will need an active JIBC Student number and Password to login. To reset your password, click, Login to Self-Service.
If you already have an active JIBC Student Number and Password, proceed to step 2.
Then click Forgot Password?
a. From the Forgot Password page, enter your JIBC Student Number and Email Address on file.
Click Submit.
b. You will receive a message to check your email for further instructions.
c. Once you have successfully reset your password, return to myJIBC student portal
2. Click Self-Service
3. Enter your JIBC Student Number and Password.
Click Sign In.
4. From the Self-Service home page, click Register & Pay for Continuing Studies.
5. Type SCRT-1656 in the Course Code Number box.
Click Search.
6. On the search results page, scroll down until you find an exam with available seats. Click Select on the exam you’d like to register for.
7. If the exam is full, you will get the message in red below, “This Section is Full.”
If the exam has available seats, there will be no message in red. Click Add Section.
8. You will get confirmation that the exam has successfully been added to your cart.
Click Next.
9. Fill out the Additional Details.
Click Submit.
10. The Pay for Classes page will be displayed. Confirm correct exam date is listed, total of $63.15 is appearing, select Payment Methods (Visa or MasterCard).
Click Proceed to Payment.
11. Payment Review page displays, click Pay Now. Please pay by Visa or MasterCard. PLEASE NOTE: Visa Debit and MasterCard Debit are not accepted.
12. Enter the required payment information. Click Pay Now.
A ‘transaction being processed’ message will be displayed.
13. When payment has been processed, the Class/Payment Acknowledgement page will be displayed.
A copy of this acknowledgement will also be sent to your email on file.
Fingerprints
After passing the exam, participants will get their fingerprints done and apply for their security worker license. The approx. cost for fingerprint varies from $80 to $95 plus GST
How do I get my Security Worker License?
Once you have successfully passed the BST courses and received your certificate, you will need to apply for your Security Worker License. Licensing is done through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Security Programs Division. JIBC is only responsible for your certification.
