Nature Journaling: Sketching Manzanitas, Beauty in Branches

Join us this summer for nature journaling at the Theodore Payne Foundation. For this class, we’ll focus on Manzanitas!

This magnificent plant is known for its dramatic form and unique branch structures. As naturalists and nature lovers, learning to observe the bark and leaves can also reveal much about the manzanita’s adaptations that help it thrive in its environment. We’ll start in the classroom with a short presentation and a few guided exercises, then move to the demonstration gardens to look, journal, and sketch.

If drawing outside in the summer heat isn’t for you, drawing inside will be an option.

Due to the slow growth rate of these beautiful branches, we typically wouldn’t bring cuttings into our classroom—but after trimming a manzanita growing near our headquarters building, we have branches on-hand to observe, hold, turn, and draw up close in the comfort of our air-conditioned classroom.

This class is for all experience levels!

We encourage participants to bring their own journal or sketchbook and personal drawing materials; loose-paper and pencils will be provided.

Please be aware a portion of this class may be held outdoors on uneven terraine, we recommend bringing comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection.

Maryanne Pittman is the Director of Public Programs at the Theodore Payne Foundation, a Certified California Naturlaist, and an experienced art and design professional. She holds degrees in Fine Art and Biology, and specializes in conservation education.
