Come watch the full lunar eclipse with Ranger Jonah & Ranger Robby just before sunrise on Tuesday.

About this Event

Description: Ranger Jonah & Ranger Robby invite you to Arabia Mountain to watch the full lunar eclipse happening in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 3.

What to expect: Ranger Jonah from at Mason Mill Park will join Ranger Robby from Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve to lead this hike to the top of Arabia Mountain where we can watch the full lunar eclipse. We'll hike to the top of the mountain as a group, sit and watch the eclipse, then stick around for sunrise, before walking back to the Nature Center. Here is the general outline of this program:

  • 5:00 am - gather near the Nature Center; fill up your mug with hot water, tea, or cocoa if you want
  • 5:20 am - introductions and begin hike to mountaintop
  • 5:45 am - arrive on mountaintop and watch lunar eclipse
  • 6:03 am - total lunar eclipse begins
  • 7:03 am - sunrise
  • 7:15 am - hike back to Nature Center
  • 7:30 am - depart

Program leader: Your guides will be Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park and Ranger Robby Astrove from Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve.

Where to meet: Find Ranger Jonah and Ranger Robby at the Arabia Mountain Nature Center at 3787 Klondike Road.

What to bring: Wear clothes and shoes that are appropriate for the activity and weather. Bring a water bottle, mug for warm drinks, snack, and hiking sticks if you need them.

Restrooms: Pit toilets are available near the Nature Center parking lot.

Recommended ages: This program is designed for all ages.

Dogs: This is not a program that is appropriate for dogs, so please leave your pup at home.

Weather contingency: This program will be held, rain or shine, unless conditions are dangerous.

Walking distance: 2 miles

Exposure: The first half of this walk is mostly under tree canopy, but the second section is on rock outcrop with full exposure to sun and wind.

Trail surface & accessibility: This program follows a combination of single-track dirt trails and uneven rock outcrop and is not accessible for chair users or strollers. The dirt trails are less than 3 feet wide and have roots and rocks. Consider bringing hiking poles if your balance requires them. Questions if this program will work for your mobility?
