ABOUT THE ARTIST
Esse-Li Esselius (born 1948 in Stockholm) is a Swedish artist and photographer who, in the late 1970’s, created groundbreaking self-portraits using a Polaroid SX-70 camera to explore transformation, gender, and the materiality of the medium. By manipulating the development process and the chemistry of the images, they produced organic patterns and forms that blurred the boundaries between photography and painting. Their work is represented in the collection of Moderna Museet in Stockholm and has been recognized for adding a new dimension to visual representations of identity.
