🎻 SICMF 2025 – Concert 7
🗓️ 10 July 2025 | 🕗 20:00 |📍 Endler Hall, Stellenbosch University
Serious talent. Unexpected turns. Zero predictability.
This electrifying evening spans centuries and styles — from powerful new works to jaw-dropping showpieces and a string-fuelled rock finale.
The concert opens with the South African premiere of Against the Dying of Light by Shane Woodborne, a deeply expressive new cello concerto performed by Peter Martens, with David Cohen conducting.
Next, the lush and cinematic Oboe Concerto “The Beautiful Hours” by Guillaume Connesson, with Dwight Parry as soloist and Michael Repper conducting — a lyrical and dazzling showcase for the oboe.
David Cohen returns as cello soloist in *Paganini’s Variations on a Theme by Rossini — fiery, virtuosic, and full of flair — with Stuart Martin conducting.
Then, a leap into the swing era: Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto, performed by the brilliant Yaoguang Zhai, combining classical polish with big band swagger.
And finally — yes, really — Thunderstruck by AC/DC, reimagined for strings in a bold arrangement by John Walton. Six festival faculty soloists, including violinists Nicolas Dautricourt, Daniel Rowland, Andrey Baranov, and cellists Maja Bogdanović, David Cohen, and Peter Martens, bring the house down.
A genre-bending celebration of instrumental brilliance. One night only.
