11th Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest
Meet at Les Davis, Dive Brief at 11am, Splash around 11:30am followed by Judging and Awards
Grab a gourd and your dive gear to join us for one of the most unique dives of the year - the underwater pumpkin carving competition (most would say it is even cooler than underwater basket weaving)! Since this isn't something you learn to do in a SCUBA class, here are some things to consider:
-You will need to add a pumpkin to your pre-dive checklist. Any pumpkin that is soccer ball sized or larger will do.
-DO NOT pre-clean your pumpkin- this is part of the challenge. You will need a tool to scrape the seeds and innards out. The fish and crab will take care of clean up.
-You will want to be able to bring your pumpkin with you down to a depth of at least 10 feet. A mesh bag or pumpkin with a sturdy stem is advisable.
-Some extra weight to help balance the extra buoyancy from the pumpkin would also be a good idea- some add that weight to their dive rig, others have weights to put in their pumpkin (after the initial challenge of getting it underwater of course).
-You will need to bring carving tools. Pumpkin knives are great and encouraged. No need to have a accident on a fun dive with a big dive knife. A way to keep track of these tools is also advised as the only thing we want floating away are the biodegradable pumpkin seeds.
-Participation in this event is voluntary and solely at a participant's own risk.
