"Critique not as authority, but as companion.
Not as a verdict, but as dialogue.
Not as control, but as initiation."
Quote from “Art Critique as Midwifery of a Shifting Consciousness” by María Inés Plaza Lazo*
This panel of international writers/critics will explore art and cultural criticism's effective potential, including alternative forms of critique.
While reviews are greatly sought after by artists and institutions in the region, very few media outlets in the Rogaland region publish art criticism, and writing and publishing critical reflections in an interconnected and locally specific art community comes with its own set of challenges.
In this panel, we pose questions such as: What if we expand the idea of art critique? Are there ways to look at and write about art that empower both the writer and receiver? And is it possible to take the pressure off of cultural and art critique as a format, without losing its potency? As we face the international rise of right wing ideologies, what is the responsibility and potential of art criticism?
Participants:
Foteini Salvaridi (she/her) is a curator and cultural producer based in Athens, Greece. Her practice also includes research-based poetry and poetic prose as forms of art criticism.
Arnau Horta holds a PhD in Philosophy at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, and develops his activity in the field of curatorship, teaching, cultural criticism and artistic research.
Sofie B. Ringstad is a writer and curator based in Stavanger. She is the general manager and editor of CAS – Contemporary Art Stavanger.
The panel is a collaboration between CAS – Contemporary Art Stavanger, Coast Contemporary and Open Studios Stavanger with generous support from Fritt Ord and Norsk tidsskriftforening.
