This is a long post with important details, so please read carefully!
We’re embarking on a 4-day Overlanding trip along the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway, starting on the morning of October 24th and ending on the morning of October 27th. Let us know if you’re coming ASAP so we can plan camp and get an accurate rig count.
Details:
Where: We’ll meet Friday morning at 9:30 AM at the Shell Gas Station (30 KY-11, Beatyville, KY 41311)
Trip Itinerary:
Friday: The day begins at 9:30 AM with a driver’s meeting to go over the plan. We’ll leave the parking lot no later than 10:00 AM. Arrive on time as we’ve got plenty of trails to cover. We’ll ride through the Red River Gorge, Spaas Creek, Pumpkin Hollow, and more before reaching camp by nightfall. Stay flexible—trail conditions can change quickly, so bring a good attitude and an adventurous spirit!
Saturday: Breakfast and a short driver’s meeting are at 8:00 AM, with a departure from camp at 8:30. We’ll stop in Beatyville for gas and supplies before hitting the trails. The aim is to reach camp again by nightfall—fingers crossed!
Sunday: A driver’s meeting at 8:00 AM kicks off the day, which will be our most challenging on the trails. Expect tough but fun terrain and some cool landmarks like the Wildcat Battle Memorial and Mullins Quarry Mines. Sunday night’s camp location will depend on how far we make it on the trails.
Monday: We’ll wrap things up with a brief meeting to share highlights and lowlights of the trip, pack up camp, and head out in a caravan.
Rig Requirements:
33" Tires (Recommended)
2" Lift (Recommended)
Factory Skids (Recommended)
Rock Sliders (Recommended)
Winch (Recommended)
Recovery Points Front and Rear (Required)
Recovery Gear (Kinetic Rope, Snatch Block, Shackles) – Lead will also have recovery gear
Full-Size Spare
Basic Tools for Trail Repair (Lead will have tools as well)
Common Fail Parts (CV Axle, Tie Rods, U-joints)
The only mandatory requirement is front and rear recovery points; the rest will simply make your trail experience much smoother. Most importantly, bring an adventurous spirit, a positive attitude, and the ability to adapt as needed.
What to bring:
This is a true outlanding trip with trails every day and a different campsite each night—dispersed camping at its finest. You’ll need to be self-sufficient for 4 days and 3 nights in the woods, which means being able to cook, clean, and properly dispose of waste. Remember, pack it in, pack it out. There will be no access to water, power, or restrooms at camp. We’ll make daily stops for gas, supplies, and restroom breaks, so don’t panic if you forget something, but try to come as prepared as possible. Expect muddy conditions (waterproof boots are highly recommended) and potentially cold nights, so bring appropriate clothing.
Please bring a couple of bundles of firewood for the community fire each night.
Chef Cory Abbott has graciously agreed to cook for us one night and morning. Everyone is asked to bring food for community meals—please contact him directly to coordinate.
Communications:
We’ll use GMRS radios on channel 17. If you don’t have a GMRS radio, I recommend the handhelds I use, which are reliable and affordable. If you can’t get one before the trip, I’ll have a couple of extras available for use during the journey.

What to Expect:
We’ll be riding trails with difficulty levels ranging from easy to challenging, rated 4-7. Some trails will be muddy, rocky, and narrow. Expect rock rash and pinstripes during this trip. If you’re worried about scratches or damage to your wheels and rock sliders, this might not be the trip for you. Trust me, you’ll be upset if you plan to leave this trip without a couple of bumps and bruises, LOL.
Alright, I think that about sums it up.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS, PLEASE ASK NOW. THERE ARE NO SILLY QUESTIONS. I’M SURE I’VE FORGOTTEN SOME DETAILS. IT’S MUCH EASIER TO SORT OUT QUESTIONS AND ISSUES NOW THAN IN THE BACKWOODS OF KENTUCKY. SO PLEASE, ASK AWAY!
Finally, bring a positive attitude, an adventurous spirit, and be ready for an unforgettable experience. This is a trip you’ll talk about for years. The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway is a truly special place with plenty of challenges and rewards. I’m super excited and can’t wait to see you all on the trails!
