Things I Think About...

Miami-area artist Judy Horowitz wears her fascination on her sleeve, and applies it to her canvases too - it’s people (though she sometimes paints pets and other things too). Horowitz’s people, who appear both whimsical and heartfelt, are realized in broad, reductive, painterly strokes. They have been a consistent theme in her artwork throughout the years, and her affection for them is evident. Portraits they are not - her works are meant to represent broader aspects of humanity and of the human experience: they are a moment in time, an age, an emotion, a purpose, an interaction, perhaps a relationship, all wrapped up in a story. There is always a story, she says. “You just have to ask.”

The works selected for Things I Think About..., which are as tender as they are droll, span roughly a decade of Horowitz's career, and underscore her dominant style of painting.
