About the event

Photography Workshop – Heligan in the Spring
Join Andy Wilson, Heligan’s very own wildlife photographer, for an evening of outdoor photography. With Andy’s expert guidance, you’ll explore Heligan’s springtime gardens in the peaceful evening hours, seeking out the perfect images of our plants, Jungle, productive gardens, nature, and wildlife.

Workshop details
Meet Andy and your fellow participants in the Heligan Kitchen for tea, cake and an introduction to your evening. Then set off, with Andy’s guidance, into the wilder parts of Heligan’s gardens including our wildlife hide — to discover the perfect locations for your photography. Whether your passion is plants, wildlife, birds, landscapes, or any other feature of our gardens, you’ll have plenty to inspire you.

You’ll receive a bespoke map created by Andy, highlighting the best photography spots across the estate. Throughout the session, Andy will be on hand to offer advice on both locations and techniques, helping you make the most of your evening outdoors.

Essential information
Bring your own camera equipment – making sure that all batteries are fully charged.
Only muted clothing colours – dark greys, greens, browns etc. No hi viz.
Wear ‘quiet’ clothes – those that don’t rustle as you move.
Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.
No perfumes, after-shaves or other strong scents.
While we’ll explore the best areas for activity, nature is wonderfully unpredictable, so we can’t promise what we’ll encounter.

About Andy Wilson
Andy is a passionate wildlife photographer whose love for nature began in childhood and deepened after he moved from Derbyshire to Cornwall twelve years ago. During the 2020 lockdown, he turned his attention to the wild residents of the Heligan Estate, capturing intimate moments that reveal the hidden lives of local species.

For the past five years, Andy has been sharing these remarkable insights through his photography, both at Heligan and across Cornwall, where he often seeks out short-eared owls, peregrine falcons and other elusive species. His dedication to the craft also takes him further afield each year, travelling to Scotland, Finland and Norway to photograph brown bears, golden eagles and other iconic wildlife.

Alongside his photography, Andy has worked at The Lost Gardens of Heligan for several years as Head of Maintenance and Restoration, giving him a deep understanding of the gardens and the wider estate. His workshops offer a rare blend of technical guidance, field experience and an insider’s knowledge of Heligan’s vibrant natural world.

You may have seen Andy’s incredible work on our social media channels but also on West Lawn at Heligan in his 200 Acres exhibition.
