HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) COMMUNITY KICK OFF (CKO)
The presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to take part in this joyous event. We have been asked to ride in a LEO supported procession and stand a Flag Line for the veterans and family to participate in the opening ceremony presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will begin the process of building a specially adapted mortgage free home for Marine Cpl Shawn Seeley.
Inspired by the training he received in the Marine Corps Junior ROTC program, Shawn Seeley enlisted in the Marines two weeks after his high school graduation.
On October 4, 2005, during his first combat deployment, Corporal Seeley was serving with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines as an Infantry machine gunner when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Ramadi, Iraq. The explosion flipped the vehicle, pinning Cpl Seeley and fellow HFOT Veteran petty officer third class Randall Leoncio underneath. Cpl Seeley sustained severe injuries including the loss of use of his right leg, right thumb amputation, and right-hand limb salvage. In 2021, Shawn’s right leg was amputated below the knee.
Shawn and his wife, Shelley, are parents to Zoey, Liam, and Lexi. Shawn is the Dean of Students at the local middle school. They are active in the community church and enjoy camping and spending time outdoors as a family. In their current multi-level home, the bedrooms and laundry are on the second floor, requiring Shawn to stay in his prosthetic for most of the day and night.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home will give Shawn the ability to rest and recover in his wheelchair with access to every room in a single-level, open layout. Pull-down shelving, lowered countertops, and roll-under access to the sink, stove, and countertops will allow him to cook safely and easily when he is wearing his prosthetic leg or in his wheelchair. The mortgage-free home will allow Shawn and Shelley to save for the future and take family vacations.
Originally from Washington, Shawn is choosing to build his home in Texas for the warmer climate and to be close to friends.
