Spokane’s EarthHawk will tell you drumming saved her life.
Now, Unity Center of North Spokane hopes you will join her and others to build a drum and find your place in a healing drum circle.
“Drumming, especially the heartbeat, is the first sound we hear when we are a fetus,” EarthHawk explained. “We hear our mother's heartbeat. We hear the blood flushing through the veins. The drumming, the sound of that heartbeat, is very comforting. It is very healing.”
Unity Center of North Spokane is offering two drum-making classes. In the first step, students create the drumbeater and decorate the frame. The next class focuses on mounting the hides EarthHawk will have already sealed and punched. Once completed, students can use their drum to enter a meditative state that heals and connects what EarthHawk describes as a society disconnected from Earth and each other.
Unity Center of North Spokane hosts a regular drum circle. Attendees spontaneously create music and rhythm to create and foster joy. A facilitator may guide the process, but the focus is on collective experience and shared rhythm. The circle begins with the creation of the mother rhythm.
“Everyone's hearts are sinking in. And at this point, I have them start getting into their deep breathing. I have them getting into releasing their cares and following the heartbeat,” she explained. “If you've ever been in the zone at a drum circle, you completely understand what I am saying. I would love for everyone to experience that zone, that inner peace, where everything falls away and you are in the moment.”
Register now, and you can take the first step toward creating your own drum and joining a circle.
