At the Autumn Equinox light and dark, day and night, are equal. Since the summer solstice, our hemisphere of the Earth has been tilting away from the sun, causing the days to shorten. The next night will be just a little longer than the day, tipping the balance toward winter.
At this time of year, and again in the Spring, our thoughts turn toward balance. The equinoxes can be a time for us to take stock of balance, of harmony, of the weight and heft of our lives, and the rhythms of our days. Are we getting enough time with others and enough solitude? Enough movement and enough stillness? Enough work and enough rest? Enough time outdoors to balance the hours inside?
Christians have long marked the seasons and given thanks. In the Christian church, the festival near the Fall Equinox is Michaelmas - the feast day of Michael and All Angels, September 29. It is often associated with a harvest festival, especially in northern places where the last crops are taken in before frost.
Our worship service at the Autumn Equinox is a way that we mark the change of season and pay attention to nature, to God’s good creation. We begin with brief readings from Christian tradition and modern writers, followed by our spoken or silent reflections on the readings. After sharing God’s Peace, we celebrate the Great Thanksgiving or Eucharist. We complete the evening with light refreshments and fellowship.
St. David’s is an open and affirming community. You are welcome!
