Ukrainian Christmas Pavuk Workshop

This December, artist Katia Nasinnyk invites you to rediscover an ancient Ukrainian tradition in a hands-on workshop, where you’ll create your own straw pavuk - or “spider” - the timeless emblem of the Ukrainian Christmas.

You may know Katia from her successful spring pysanka workshop. Now she returns to guide you through this timeless folk art, combining geometry, spirit, and holiday magic.

Crafted entirely from straw and suspended from the ceiling, the pavuk was believed to catch both visible and invisible evil in its delicate web, protecting the home from negative energy. Each pavuk is made of small geometric shapes - triangles, squares, hexagons - combined into larger diamonds.

The slightest breeze sets the pavuk in motion, as if it were alive. That’s the magic!
