Join naturalists with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) and Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District (HCSWCD) on Monday, September 22, for a free in-person training on how to identify and report forest pests and invasive plants. The event will run from 9:00-1130am, and attendees are encouraged to stick around afterward to continue the discussion, just be sure to bring your own lunch. This is a great training for those looking to get involved with the volunteer Forest Pest Hunters program and participate in the beech leaf disease survey season, which runs until midnight on Sunday, October 5.
The guided walk will begin and end at the Speculator Pavilion. It will kick off at 9:00am with a talk about forest pests in the Adirondack region with APIPP Terrestrial Invasive Species Manager Ari Giller-Leinwohl. Attendees will learn about invasive plants, forest pest identification, and reporting invasive species using the iMapInvasives app. Emerging forest pests like beech leaf disease (BLD) and emerald ash borer (EAB) will be covered in detail.
Around 10:00am, the group will depart for an easy, 1-mile walk along the neighboring Sacandaga River Community Park trails. We will review native plant and invasive species identification as well as reporting using the iMap app. APIPP and HCSWCD staff will be around to answer any questions from folks and give a recap of our season’s field projects.
Everyone participating in the Guided Forest Pest and Invasive Plant Walk is asked to bring the appropriate gear for spending a couple of hours outside in the fall.
