Wealth & Poverty w/ Robert Reich: Taxing and Redistributing

Join the library to explore why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly over time. This class is taught by Robert Reich--whose UC Berkeley college course on Wealth and Poverty offers insights into the political and public-policy debates that have arisen in light of this inequality, as well as possible means of reversing it. This community gathering is a collaboration between the Sparta Free Library and the Blue Stockings Book Club. Together, we will view course videos and hold brief discussions immediately following.

We'll be focusing on these questions this week: Should the top marginal tax rate be raised? Should wealth be taxed? In what ways is income now redistributed? To what extent is it redistributed upward, from the poor or the lower middle to the upper middle and the rich? What's the difference between redistribution policies that focus on taxes, and those that focus on the beneficiaries of government programs financed by taxes?
