Are you passionate about clean water and exploring nature? Here’s your chance to make a real impact—and have fun doing it!
Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) is a citizen science program. As a volunteer, you'll monitor your local streams by collecting aquatic macroinvertebrates (like insects and crustaceans) and testing water quality—collecting data that helps inform restoration efforts and guides the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to protect our waterways.
To become a certified VA Save Our Streams Monitor, there is a two-step process:
STEP 1: Start the Online Certification
https://tr.ee/Lt3FNt
The online certification consists of three webinars. The webinars may be completed at your leisure, but must be completed BEFORE the field day training session.
You MUST complete an online certification registration form and pass an online exam to earn your Online VA SOS Certificate!
STEP 2: Register for the VA SOS Field Day Training Session
COMPLETE THIS FORM TO RSVP for the In-Person Field Session
https://forms.gle/Dp9R5q2RQgf8AUwFA
Attendees must complete the online portion of the certification (Part 1) in order to attend the field day session.
Attendees should bring a water bottle and wear water-friendly shoes.
MEET AT THE PICNIC SHELTER
**VA SOS monitors must submit data within a year of their certification training and then submit data at least once every 2 years to stay active.
SPACE IS LIMITED - early registration is recommended – deadline for registration is Friday, August 29th, 2025.
A full class of five registrations is needed to hold the training.
The Izaak Walton League is partnering with the Dan River Basin Association to provide this workshop for those who wish to become a certified VA SOS Monitor. The workshop is led by Jessica Driver, VA SOS Trainer.
