Join us at a compost depot to engage our hands and minds. We will demystify the microbiology of the compost process and make a soil scientist out of everyone—one pile at a time!
Sonoma Ecology Center, Compost Depot, and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space invite you to an interactive workshop at Sonoma Garden Park, where we’ll explore the essential role of composting in building healthier soils and gardens.
We’re excited to feature Bobby Nicholson, Soil Health Scientist, compost maker, and a passionate advocate for unlocking the ancient technologies of BioChar. Bobby works hands-on with farms and vineyards across Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties, creating compost, liquid extracts, and soil amendments to build living, thriving soil ecosystems. His deep knowledge and practical experience will bring invaluable insights to this workshop.
This hands-on event is perfect for gardeners, nature enthusiasts, or anyone curious about sustainable gardening practices. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, you’ll walk away with valuable knowledge about the composting process, soil health, and practical tips to improve your own garden’s vitality.
What You’ll Learn:
- Composting 101: How to make nutrient-rich compost from everyday organic materials.
- Soil Health: Why healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden.
- Sustainable Gardening Tips: Practical advice on using compost to boost plant growth and reduce your environmental impact.
- Biochar & Soil Amendments: Insights from Bobby Nicholson on BioChar, liquid compost extracts, and how to enhance soil biology on your own site.
Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to get your hands dirty as we demonstrate the composting process in real time!
All ages are welcome! This workshop is family-friendly and designed for people of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re a budding young gardener or an expert in the field, there’s something for everyone to learn and enjoy.
There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
Sonoma Garden Park was protected by Ag + Open Space in November of 2011 for recreation and preservation of its natural resources. It serves as an outdoor classroom for agriculture field trips for nearby elementary schools through Sonoma Ecology Center’s “Growing Discovery” program. The 6-acre property, hidden in eastern Sonoma, is an incredible public park and working garden site in Sonoma Valley, home to a wide array of habitats alongside sustainably designed systems for both agriculture use and landscaping purposes.
