Invitation to the Dance

Our New Year Concert offers a selection of some of the most vivid and exciting dance music in the orchestral repertoire – music that moves effortlessly between elegance, exuberance, and raw rhythmic drive. From the theatrical sparkle of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus Overture to the dark, smouldering energy of Piazzolla’s Libertango, these works show composers drawing on popular and folk traditions to create music of lasting power. Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances combine buoyant rhythms with lyrical warmth, while Brahms’s Hungarian Dances relish sharp contrasts and dramatic flair. Kodály’s Dances of Galánta draw deeply on Hungarian folk roots, unfolding with romance and colour, while Márquez’s Danzón brings a distinctive Latin pulse. Coleridge-Taylor’s The Bamboula adds wit, charm, and rhythmic sparkle.

For this concert, we welcome back Sabrina Ko, conductor, violinist, and passionate music educator. A graduate of the University of Birmingham and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Sabrina is increasingly in demand with orchestras across the Midlands and beyond. Known for her clarity, energy, and strong commitment to inclusive music-making, Sabrina brings both precision and vitality to a programme that is, at heart, about the joy of rhythm and movement.
