Performing Improvisation like it’s no big deal (continued)
A second edition of our previous workshop, because we feel we can continue and deepen this theme and research.
For whom: for everyone who wants to develop the skills of dance improvisation, creation in the moment, open for professionals and amateurs alike, we seek to make it accessible and challenging for everyone involved. (You are still welcome to come if you did not attend the previous workshop)
"It's not the note you play that's the wrong note - it's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong" Miles Davies
What if there were no mistakes? We warmly invite you for the 2nd edition of our workshop ‘Performing Improvisation like it’s no big deal’. In this session we will practise watching and being watched while improvising, which affords us the opportunity to bring greater awareness to our movement as well as a new sense of timing and rhythm. To be seen and to share are vital human needs, in this class we will be working technically towards inviting others into our dance, through a softening in the body/mind and seeking an unapologetic and ‘radical’ physical expression.
By ‘performing’ we can directly influence our audience. As mediaeval Japanese theatre practitioner Zeami said ‘our aim can be to pacify the devils within the hearts and minds of the audience’.
The class will contain scores and exercises for solo, partner and group dance. We will focus primarily on dance improvisation and guide this gradually towards contact improvisation. Looking especially at the spectrum of size and speed that is so applicable to performance. Starting from noticing the smallest and slowest details, tuning and training our attention and steadily exploring all the way to wild and expansive movement.
Who we are: Violeta Matiushenko and Daniel Kearns are working in dance and theatre and very much interested in improvisation and creating an accessible, humorous, deep and sustainable artistic practice.
