Broad and Fine Stokes
‘While there is movement through external space, consciousness is still directed by a sense of inner drive and mobility, not yet by outer intentionality.’
Basic Neurocellular Patterns, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen
A contact improvisation class in which we will explore two potential sides of the spectrum for our movement.
1- Waking up our vitality and expansiveness in terms of range of motion, heating up, using dynamism and moving through space. (the broad stokes)
2- Allowing subtle, nuanced and specific movements to become the focus in our awareness. Finding repose, stillness and ease, lightness (the fine strokes)
How can these sides complement and lay a foundation for each other?
On both ends of the scale, can our inner curiosity be our drive, over an external sense of aesthetic or ambition
Specific movement principles:
- we shall consider and practice the head and tail relationship, considering and practicing points of initiation of our movement, e.g, from the naval and de-prioritising the extremities of fingers and face to explore other possibilities for our dances.
Who we are: Violeta Matiushenko and Daniel Kearns are working in dance and theatre, interested in improvisation and creating an accessible, humorous, deep and sustainable artistic practice.
Cost of class: 15 Euro
