Calling all children and children at heart. Come learn about the magic of mushrooms with Genesee Land Trust and Rochester Area Mycological Association. Hunt for fungus in the woods and learn about what you find as RAMA experts help identify the mushrooms and share interesting facts.
You’ll visit the Macy Tree to see large fungus growing around the base, and take a winding, hilly loop along the wetland. This trail is often narrow, goes over tree roots, and can be muddy depending on conditions. The morning walk is shorter, wider, and less hilly.
Note: Foraging is never allowed at nature preserves. Collected mushroom specimens will be documented for science and left in the woods.
Walk and Trail Description: We will meet in the parking lot where the trail starts out as packed gravel and transitions to a grass surface, approximately 5’ wide. As you enter the woods, the trail becomes compacted soil and splits to the left and right.
We will take a left as we enter the woods, a compacted soil trail will lead us towards the east half of the Preserve. We will then take a right at the second fork in the trail which will lead us around a compacted soil loop trail that is for intermediate and advanced hikers due to the uneven terrain; 0-10% slopes with roots and leaves, and is approximately 3-4’ wide.
We will follow the trail to the Macy Tree , a 250+ year old tree, and then follow along the wetland shoreline to reach the observation deck. We will then head back to the parking lot.

Parking and Public Transit: Parking for the preserve is located off Seaman Street, perpendicular to the red barn and fence. The trail entrance is located directly south of the parking area. Please do not block the entrance to the Highway Department facility. There are no designated accessible parking spots. There are no public transit options to the preserve.
Restrooms: There are no restrooms on site. The nearest restrooms are located approximately 1.5 miles east into the Village of Sodus Point.
Pets: Dogs, other pets, emotional support, comfort, and companion animals are not allowed at Genesee Land Trust events. Although your pet may be friendly, everyone has different familiarity and experiences with animals. Thank you for being respectful to other attendees.
Service Animals: Service animals, which are dogs or miniature horses that are specifically trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities, are welcome. Service animals must always be under the control of the handler, housebroken, cleaned up after, and vaccinated in accordance with state laws.
