Ten years ago, I started performing with reel-to-reel tape recorders. I was always drawn to the ones that were cheap, that people were getting rid of — so-called “not valuable” machines. An important part of my practice is building a setup that can change, that can break or be broken during a performance — I am not using hi-fi gear that requires specific, careful maintenance. I treat tape machines as musical instruments, which I play using an “extended technique” approach.
During this workshop, each of us will compose and record a tape loop using various sounds from the space around us — including external sounds, nearby objects; and the internal space of inner workings of the tape machines. We won’t focus on stability or perfection of the recorders, but instead will explore malfunctions and imperfections — broken channels, ground noise issues, loose screws that rattle, or overly loud button clicks.
All of these internal and external sound artifacts will become the sonic material for our tape loops, which we will manipulate, modify, splice, and manually “re-edit” during the recording and editing process.
At the end of the workshop, we’ll play our loops together and record a short group composition.
You are welcome to brings objects or music instruments if you would like to use their sounds in your tape recordings.
