Found all over the world, labyrinths are large pieces of art often used for walking meditation. They are however also popular as smaller art pieces where one is able to ‘walk’ the labyrinth by using one’s finger or eyesight to trace its singular path. More popular now than it was eight hundred years ago, the infamous Chartres Labyrith, is extremely elegant in its symmetry and symbolism.
This workshop will commence with an introductory slideshow on Chartres Labyrinth before we dive into constructing this art piece utilising the simple yet profound and time-tested tools of compass, straightedge and pencil. A calm and meditative class, we will be utilising the drawing process to connect our head, heart and hand.
Contemplative geometry is the holistic study of the relationships between numbers, shapes, and patterns as they occur in nature and as applied and revered in sacred art and architecture across cultures around the world. It emphasises the underlying universal language and fundamental principals within and around us. The practice of drawing with a compass is an age-old practice known and necessary for our ancestors. It can be a transformative practice as it touches a primordial place in us. Sessions are held in a restful and contemplative environment and are an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the process of connecting to primordial shapes and patterns.
This workshop is open to all.
Prerequisites are a curious hand and a longing heart. No drawing experience is needed.
