New Class Offering! Intro to Scent Work
Starting Monday January 19th
5:30-6:30 pm
The Living Arts Studio
108 E College Ave. Silver City, NM 88061
This four-week introductory class invites dogs and their humans into the world of scent work through thoughtful, confidence-building exercises that honor the dog’s natural abilities.
Scent work provides meaningful mental enrichment while supporting focus, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and clear communication between dog and handler. No prior scent work experience is required.
Week 1 – Box Work
We begin with foundational box work, where dogs learn to search in a simple, low-pressure setup. Dogs use their nose to locate scent among a group of identical boxes, building confidence, independence, and clear indication skills, while handlers learn how to observe and support the search.
Week 2 – Handler Discrimination
Dogs learn to identify and locate their handler’s unique scent. This exercise deepens focus, strengthens scent discrimination, and reinforces partnership, supporting a clearer and more attuned working relationship between dog and human.
Week 3 – Introduction to Target Scent
Dogs are introduced to birch, a traditional detection scent. We focus on pairing this new odor with the dog’s developing search skills, maintaining clarity and confidence as complexity gradually increases.
Week 4 – Scent Games
The final week brings everything together through scent-based games that reinforce learning, encourage creativity, and keep the work engaging and fun.
This class is suitable for dogs at least one year old who are able to walk comfortably on leash. All breeds are welcome. The class is designed to build confidence, trust, and enjoyment for both dog and human.
