Michelangelo as Art Historian

Join Dr. Michael Kemling for more lectures on Renaissance Art! The origins of the discipline of Art History has many points, but none greater than Michelangelo himself. In fact, Michelangelo’s entire artistic identity was based on his understanding of the traditions of ancient, medieval, and 15th-century art. This lecture looks at how Michelangelo understood and used his knowledge of art history to both enhance the symbolic meaning to his work as well as to break the visual traditions of the past in order to create a new visual language. Thus, it is the life and work of Michelangelo on which the practice of modern art history is based.
