Oil Painting Foundations: Value, Color & Brushwork
A 4-week guided series exploring complementary color harmony and expressive technique
In this 4-week oil painting course, you'll develop a deeper understanding of value, limited color harmony, and painterly brushwork through focused weekly studies using complementary color pairs. Each session builds on the last, allowing you to internalize key concepts and apply them with confidence and creativity.
Course Overview:
Week 1: Blue & Orange
Explore value relationships and color temperature within this bold complementary pairing. We'll focus on simplifying form and using brushwork to describe light.
Week 2: Red & Green
Learn how subtle shifts in value and saturation can create depth and atmosphere, even within a limited palette.
Week 3: Yellow & Purple
Discover how to balance light and dark in one of the most challenging complementary sets, while continuing to build expressive, intentional brushwork.
Week 4: Final Painting
Apply everything you've learned to create a complete painting using your choice of subject. You'll receive individual guidance to help bring your vision to life with clarity, control, and expression.
This course is ideal for painters who want to gain control over color and value without being overwhelmed by a full palette. Through guided studies and hands-on practice, you’ll build technical skill and artistic confidence. Each week will result in a completed study painting in the given complimentary color set.
Meets once a week for 4 weeks (October 9, 16, 23, 30) 5pm to 8pm
All supplies provided
Course fee: $75 per session or $275 for the full course
(Non-refundable; may be transferred to another course date)
All levels welcome. Some painting experience is helpful but not required.
