Community & Friends Welcome Event for “LIFE’S HEALING CHOICES”
Life’s Healing Choices: Freedom from Your Hurts, Hang-ups, and Habits is a book by John Baker with a foreword by Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church. It outlines an eight-step, Christ-centered recovery program designed to help individuals overcome personal struggles such as emotional pain, addictions, and destructive habits. Grounded in the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3–12), the program emphasizes spiritual growth, healing, and transformation through intentional choices.
The Eight Healing Choices
The book presents eight practical steps, each paired with a corresponding Beatitude, to guide readers toward wholeness, happiness, and spiritual maturity:
1. Admitting Need – The Reality Choice
• Principle: Realize you’re not God and admit you’re powerless to control your tendencies to do wrong (aligned with “Blessed are the poor in spirit”).
• Focus: Acknowledge personal struggles and limitations, recognizing the need for God’s help to begin the healing process.
2. Getting Help – The Hope Choice
• Principle: Earnestly believe that God exists, that you matter to Him, and that He has the power to help you recover (“Blessed are those who mourn”).
• Focus: Build faith in God’s ability to provide comfort and strength, often through community support like Celebrate Recovery.
3. Letting Go – The Commitment Choice
• Principle: Consciously commit your life and will to Christ’s care and control (“Blessed are the meek”).
• Focus: Surrender control to Jesus, trusting Him to guide your recovery.
4. Coming Clean – The Housecleaning Choice
• Principle: Openly examine and confess your faults to God, yourself, and someone you trust (“Blessed are the pure in heart”).
• Focus: Practice honesty and accountability by confessing sins and struggles, which fosters emotional and spiritual cleansing.
5. Making Changes – The Transformation Choice
• Principle: Voluntarily submit to God’s changes in your life to replace harmful habits with healthy ones (“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness”).
• Focus: Embrace God’s transformative work to develop new behaviors and thought patterns.
6. Repairing Relationships – The Relationship Choice
• Principle: Evaluate relationships and make amends for harm done to others (“Blessed are the merciful”).
• Focus: Seek forgiveness and restore broken relationships through humility and action.
7. Maintaining Momentum – The Maintenance Choice
• Principle: Reserve a daily time with God for self-examination, Bible reading, and prayer to maintain progress (“Blessed are the peacemakers”).
• Focus: Stay consistent in spiritual practices to sustain growth and prevent relapse.
8. Recycling Pain – The Sharing Choice
• Principle: Yield yourself to God to share your experiences and help others, turning personal pain into a testimony (“Blessed are those who are persecuted”).
• Focus: Use your healing journey to support others, finding purpose in past struggles.

Purpose and Impact
The book addresses universal struggles—hurts (emotional pain), hang-ups (unhealthy behaviors or attitudes), and habits (addictions or compulsions)—and offers a path to healing through faith-based choices. It emphasizes that happiness and healing are attainable through intentional decisions, supported by God’s grace and community. The program has been widely adopted in churches, with small group study guides and DVDs available to facilitate group discussions.
