Back by popular demand – A Bite of History!
This year, join SVHS as we explore the history of the soda fountain and the food and beverages they were known for – especially here in Sewickley!
The soda fountain was a uniquely American invention. For decades, it was the reactor to the society around it – creating space for all ages and sexes to gather, through wars, prohibition, temperance, and ever evolving food technology and safety. It was a quintessential American experience and a cornerstone of pop culture that still reverberates today.
Join SVHS on Thursday, September 25 to have a little taste of the delicious history of the American soda fountain.
The evening will start with SVHS Executive Director, Amanda Schaffer, as she walks you through the history and foods associated with the Sewickley and nationwide soda fountain scene.
Attendees will then be able to assemble their own plates, enjoying the historic foods while exploring the Collections at SVHS, a Sewickley soda fountain ad display, and a special pop-up exhibit courtesy Janet Oellig, including an original (70-90 years old) soda fountain table and chairs and other soda fountain ephemera.
Members can enjoy a special member price ($25 pp). Ticket includes food, drink, and special take-away goodies including an SVHS-branded float glass! All attendees then are welcome to stay for the first lecture of the 2025 -2026 season, which follows the "A Bite of History" event at 7pm.
