Modal Music for cello and bowed instruments — with Mayu Shviro
The cello is an enchanting instrument, mostly known for its classical background and the music composed during the Classical and Romantic eras in Europe. Yet, thanks to its fretless character and its rich middle and low tones, it has been used for decades in the music of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Greece, India, and beyond.
About the Seminar
In this seminar, Mayu will guide participants through the sound, techniques, and ornaments of modal music, working directly on our instruments. Through the study of various pieces from different genres and improvisation within the framework of modality, participants will deepen their understanding of this rich musical language.
The class will also explore group playing, focusing on ways to accompany one another and create a collective sound.
Who is it for?
This course is ideal for musicians from a classical Western background — primarily cello, violin, viola, and other bowed strings. It will also be highly valuable for players of bowed instruments already rooted in modal traditions (such as lyra, kemençe, kamanche, yaylı tanbur) who wish to delve deeper into makam, exploring the colors of bowed instruments from the perspective of the cello.

Le violoncelle est un instrument envoûtant, principalement connu pour son répertoire classique et les œuvres issues des époques classique et romantique en Europe. Pourtant, il est depuis des décennies utilisé dans les musiques de Turquie, d’Azerbaïdjan, de Grèce, d’Inde et bien au-delà.
À propos du séminaire
Dans ce séminaire, Mayu guidera les participants à travers le son, les techniques et les ornements de la musique modale, en travaillant directement sur les instruments. L’apprentissage se fera à partir de pièces issues de genres variés, avec un travail approfondi sur l’improvisation dans le cadre de la modalité.
Un accent particulier sera mis sur le jeu en groupe, avec des exercices et idées pour apprendre à s’accompagner mutuellement et créer un son collectif.
Pour qui ?
Ce cours s’adresse aux musiciens issus d’un parcours classique occidental — en particulier les violoncellistes, violonistes, altistes et autres instruments à archet — mais il sera également très enrichissant pour les joueurs d’instruments déjà ancrés dans la musique modale (comme la lyra, le kemençe, le kamantcha, le yaylı tanbur) qui souhaitent approfondir leur connaissance du makam et explorer les couleurs des instruments à archet sous l’angle du violoncelle.

BIOGRAPHIE
Mayu Shviro commence l’étude du violoncelle à l’âge de six ans, dans le cadre de la musique classique occidentale. À dix-huit ans, elle découvre la musique modale et se laisse séduire par la puissance et la beauté de ces traditions. Elle décide alors de se consacrer à ce langage musical et entame un voyage à travers les répertoires arabes, turcs et azéris, avec son violoncelle comme compagnon de route.
Elle part en Grèce pour étudier la musique ottomane auprès d’Evgenios Voulgaris, puis en Azerbaïdjan pour se former à la musique azérie avec le joueur de kemençe Elshan Mansurov. À l’été 2018, elle participe à l’orchestre MITOS du Musical Workshop Labyrinth, en Crète.
Interprète et collaboratrice éclectique, elle a joué et enregistré dans de nombreux styles aux côtés d’artistes et ensembles variés : Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Göksel Baktagir, Piris Eliyahu, Shai Maestro, Ofer Mizrahi, Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood, l’Orchestre Est-Ouest (en soliste), Arkho, Avishai Cohen (trompette)…
En 2024, elle sort son premier album, The Old Man and the Sea, inspiré du roman d’Ernest Hemingway, accompagné d’un film d’animation qu’elle a réalisé elle-même et qui transporte le public dans un univers parallèle.
Depuis 2020, elle transmet également son savoir lors de séminaires du réseau Labyrinth Musical Workshops : Labyrinth Online, Labyrinth Crète et Labyrinth Catalunya.
Aujourd’hui, Mayu compose sa propre musique, nourrie de toutes les rencontres et traditions qui ont marqué son parcours : le jazz, les musiques modales turque, azérie et arabe, ainsi que les sons de la nature.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Israel of Japanese and Iraqi descent, Mayu started her classical western music studies on the cello when she was 6. She discovered modal music at the age of 18. Enchanted by the power and the beauty of these musical traditions she decided to focus on this style and began her musical journey with her cello through the Arabic, Turkish and Azeri traditions.
She traveled to learn from masters of Ottoman music in Greece (Evgenious Voulgaris), and Azeri music in Azerbaijan (Elshan Mansurov).
In the summer of 2018 she was a member of MITOS orchestra of Musical Workshop Labyrinth on Crete, Greece.
She performed and recorded various kinds of styles with many ensembles and artists : Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Göksel Baktagir, Piris Eliyahu, Shai Maestro, Ofer Mizrahi, Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood, l’Orchestre Est-Ouest (solist), Arkho, Avishai Cohen (trumpet)…
Her New album "The old Man and the Sea" is her first album that came out on 2024. Together with an animation film she created she takes the audience to a parallel universe. The piece is inspired by the story of the old Man and the Sea by E. Hemingway.
Since 2020, she started to teach in Labyrinth.
These days she is creating her own music that is inspired by the traditions and people that crossed her way: Jazz, modal music, (Turkish, Azeri, Arabic) , and sounds of nature.
