Ceremony Honoring Lewis & Clark "End of the Trail" Monument Artist Stanley Wanlass

The City of Seaside invites the public to a free commemorative ceremony at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6 honoring renowned sculptor Stanley Wanlass, creator of the iconic Lewis & Clark “End of the Trail” monument, at the Turnaround in downtown Seaside.

Originally unveiled in 1990, the monument has become one of the Oregon Coast’s most photographed landmarks and a lasting symbol of Seaside’s cultural and historical heritage. The 35th anniversary ceremony will feature the dedication of a permanent plaque recognizing Wanlass, ensuring the artist’s legacy is celebrated for generations to come.

“The art of Stanley Wanlass has left a lasting legacy in our community,” said Seaside Mayor Steve Wright. “We are grateful for the impact of his work, which continues to inspire residents and visitors alike.”

The ceremony will include brief remarks from Mayor Wright and other local and regional leaders, followed by the unveiling of the newly installed plaque. Stanley and Joy Wanlass will be in attendance, making this a special opportunity for the Seaside community to honor the artist in person.
