The Midwest Classic Movie Series takes movies from the 1910's to the 1960's that have stood the test of time to be considered classic and puts them where they belong - back on the big screen. The Historic Midwest Theater is the perfect setting to watch these films as it transports you back to the era they were released in. Whether you saw them on one of their original runs or only on TV, make your way to a M.C.M. screening on the 3rd Saturday of the Month.
This September M.C.M. is celebrating the life and career of one of the freshest and brightest stars of the 1950’s - James Dean. On September 30th, 1955 the 24 year old James Dean tragically died in an automobile accident, cutting what is thought of as a great career short. In honor of the 70th Anniversary of his passing, Midwest Classic Movies is doing a weekend takeover and showing the last three movies the actor ever made.
Giant
Dean stars as Jett Rink, a ranch hand whose life is entwined with the owners of a huge cattle ranch in Texas.
While back east, Texas rancher Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson) meets and falls in love with Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor). Upon their arrival to Reata, the Benedict's large cattle ranch, Leslie is met with hostilities from Bick’s sister Luz (Mercedes McCambridge) and the unwelcome advances of Jett. After Luz is killed in a riding accident, they soon discover that she has left a small portion of the ranch to Jett in her will.
Tensions arise in Bick and Leslie’s marriage after the birth of their twins. She leaves Texas with the children and Bick follows to win her back. While they are gone Jett discovers oil on his patch of land. He tries to convince Bick to drill on the rest of Reata, but he refuses, wanting to remain a rancher.
Years later the twins, Jordan (Dennis Hopper) and Luz II (Carroll Baker), are all grown up. America is about to enter World War II and causes tension between the family. Things come to a head when Jett, now a rich oil man, invites them to a lavish event at his hotel in Austin.
Based on the novel by Edna Ferber and nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including James Dean in his 2nd consecutive posthumous nomination for Best Actor. Giant won the Oscar for Best Director - George Stevens.
