Join artists Rana Begum and Andrew Roberts for two in-depth conversations exploring their new exhibitions, presented as part of the SCAD Museum of Art’s fall season. Begum will expand on the principles of color, light, and geometry that serve as the essential components of her dynamic works, engaging the legacies of abstraction, Minimalism, and Op art. Roberts will expound on his installation Haunted, which reimagines the interior of a fast-food chain restaurant as a liminal space at the convergence of his personal experience, corporate aesthetics, and geopolitical systems.

About the artists
Rana Begum (b. 1977, Sylhet, Bangladesh; lives and works in London) focuses on the interplay between light and color, blurring the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and architecture. Her use of repetitive geometric patterns — found both within Islamic art and the industrial cityscape — is inspired by childhood memories of the rhythmic, daily recitals of the Qur’an. Influenced by the geometric abstraction of Minimalism and Constructivism and the work of artists such as Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Jesús Rafael Soto, and Tess Jaray, Begum’s work ranges from drawings, paintings, and wall-based sculptures to large-scale public art projects.

A comprehensive monograph titled Rana Begum: Space Light Colour was published by Lund Humphries in 2021. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2020.
Andrew Roberts (b. 1995, Tijuana, Mexico; lives and works in Mexico City) incorporates elements from gameplay, roleplay, and world-building into his multiplatform practice, recognizing in these mechanisms a cultural structure where consumption and production become one. Roberts has presented his work in solo and two-person exhibitions at Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City; Pequod Co., Mexico City; House of Chappaz, Valencia and Barcelona; Best Practice, San Diego; and Delaplane, San Francisco. He presented Haunted Silicone Mass, a solo booth with Pequod Co. at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2023. Significant group exhibitions include the Institut Culturel du Mexique, Paris; Quiet As It’s Kept, the 2022 Whitney Biennial, New York; the Institute of Mexico in Spain, Madrid; ECLIPSE, the 7th Athens Biennale; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, among others.
