The Carroll Baldwin Memorial Institute and Cultura Plenera invite you to “Puerto Rico in Savage”!
"Puerto Rico in Savage" is a free public celebration presented by the Carroll Baldwin Memorial Institute in collaboration with Cultura Plenera, offering the Savage community and the broader Maryland public an immersive experience of Puerto Rican culture and traditions as practiced by Puerto Rican Marylanders. This vibrant event fosters community connection through music, dance, and art, creating space for cultural exchange and shared celebration by honoring the heritage of Puerto Rican residents while welcoming people of all backgrounds to participate.
This event will feature live music, cultural demonstrations, and community workshops, all highlighting the richness of Puerto Rican traditions. Central to the event will be performances by Los Hijo ‘e Plena, Cultura Plenera’s musical ensemble, which specializes in Bomba and Plena, two Afro-Puerto Rican musical genres.
In addition to musical performances, we will present five key Puerto Rican cultural elements:
· Cabezudos: Performers wear oversized papier-mâché masks of cultural icons, dancing through the event space in joyful procession.
· Vejigantes: Colorful and mischievous characters in horned masks and vibrant costumes who engage the audience while “warding off evil spirits.”
· Zanqueros: Stilt walkers in elaborate outfits who bring spectacle and festive energy to the event.
· Plena Percussion: Demonstrations and interactive workshops using traditional instruments like panderetas (tambourines) and güiros (gourd scrappers).
· Bomba Dancing: A participatory and rhythmic Afro-Caribbean dance form with call-and-response interplay between dancer and drummer.
Completing the experience will be many local artisans and food vendors:
· An artisan market will offer attendees a unique opportunity to purchase handmade crafts and connect with local Puerto Rican artists. Some artisans will also hold informal demonstrations or mini-sessions with children to share their techniques and the stories behind their work, adding an educational and interactive layer to the event.
· To immerse you further into the Puerto Rican culture, food trucks specializing in Puerto Rican cuisine will be on-site, offering traditional island dishes that allow you to taste the culture.
So save the date, spread the word, and make plans to come with your entire family and all your friends and neighbors to enjoy the best Puerto Rico has to offer right here in Savage, Maryland.
