Featured Reader: Gavin T. Walters Sr, MSW, USAF Veteran, is a disabled Veteran, nonprofit leader, and statewide coalition builder. He serves as the Executive Director of the Dwyer Coalition for Military Veterans & Families, Inc., a New York-based nonprofit focused on advancing peer support, advocacy, and family-centered initiatives for Veterans and military-connected communities.
Originally from Jamaica, Gavin moved to the U.S. in 1988 and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Although his military service was cut short due to medical issues, his commitment to service never wavered. He earned his Master of Social Work (MSW) from Adelphi University in 2020 and has since worked to ensure no Veteran is left behind.
One of Gavin’s most powerful public efforts includes completing two 56-mile awareness walks from Kingston to Albany in 22 hours to raise awareness around Veteran mental health, which inspired the annual Walk-A-Mile in My Shoes event. In 2022, he was honored as Ulster County’s Veteran of the Month.
Today, he leads the Dwyer Coalition full-time, overseeing retreats, community partnerships, scholarship programs, and statewide advocacy efforts focused on connection, dignity, and impact. He lives in New York with his wife of over ten years, Tomisha, and their three children: Gavin Jr., Eden, and Aniyah.
