Alice by Heart follows Alice Spencer, a teenage girl who takes shelter in an underground bunker during the London Blitz. There, she is reunited with her best friend, Alfred, who is dying of tuberculosis. To comfort him in his final moments, Alice retells their favorite story, Alice in Wonderland, by heart. As her grief deepens, the dreamlike journey begins to blur, weaving fantasy with the painful reality of Alfred’s impending death. Their shared journey reflects Alice’s fear, love, and denial, as she uses imagination as a refuge from loss. The musical tenderly explores themes of grief, first love, and the painful yet necessary act of letting go.
