SOFRA - Episode 2: From Baku with Love
Join local creative & grandmother, Ayka Abdullayeva, for a warm, inspiring, and delicious culinary experience!
Embark on an adventure through Azerbaijani cuisine as we prepare kutab, a traditional stuffed flatbread with various vegetarian, cheese, and meat fillings. Enjoy a communal sit-down dinner, traditional Azeri tea & sweets, and life reflections that will take you right back to grandma’s kitchen.
Hailing from Baku, Azerbaijan, Ayka moved to Sarnia 25 years ago with her husband and two young daughters. A trained chemist by profession, she’s been working in healthcare since moving to Canada, while also pursuing her passion for sewing with the lovely ladies at Lord’s Sewing & Alterations in Mitton Village.
Sofra is a monthly outdoor cooking class hosted by The Backyard Farmer and a featured guest.
Sofra (سفرة), meaning “table spread” in Arabic, is a space where cross-cultural cuisine meets seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Guided by our elders, we use what’s in season, learn about the produce we are using, and give “ugly produce” a chance at the limelight with traditional recipes from around the world.
Our aim is to foster a love of seasonal cooking, cultural exploration, and community. A communal dinner preparation and mealtime - it’s just like grandma’s kitchen, only if you had a grandma from every corner of the world.
Yalla bina ‘ala sofra! (Let’s go to the table!)
